This policy explains the cookies and similar local storage that Vokio uses. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy and is written to meet the UK's Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and the UK GDPR.
Vokio uses only cookies that are strictly necessary to run the site or that remember a preference you have set. We do not use analytics, advertising, tracking or profiling cookies, and we do not share cookie data with advertisers. Because these cookies are essential or set only on your instruction, they do not require prior consent under PECR - but we tell you about them here so you know exactly what is stored.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
vokio_session |
Essential | Keeps you signed in and secures your session (admins). Marked HttpOnly, Secure and SameSite=Strict. | 7 days |
vokio_td |
Essential | Set only if you tick "don't ask again on this device" after entering a two-factor code, so that device is not asked for a code again while the trust lasts. Contains a random token only - no account details. Marked HttpOnly, Secure and SameSite=Strict. You can revoke it at any time from My Account, and changing your password revokes it automatically. | 30 days |
vokio_theme |
Preference | Remembers your light/dark theme choice. Set only when you change the theme. | 1 year |
vokio_lang |
Preference | Remembers the language you chose, so this browser shows it again next time. Holds a two-letter language code and nothing else. Set only when you actually choose a language: if we work your language out from your browser's own settings we do not write anything, so nobody gets a cookie for a choice they never made. | 1 year |
vokio_reading |
Preference | Remembers your reading setting - the background and spacing used for question text - so this browser shows it again next time. Holds the name of the setting and nothing else. Set only when you change it, and you can clear it from the settings panel during any activity. | 1 year |
vokio_name |
Preference | Remembers the name you last joined an activity with, so it is filled in for you next time. Set only if you tick "Remember my name on this device", which is off unless you turn it on. It fills the box in and never joins for you, so you always see the name before it is used. Clear it by unticking the box, or from the settings panel during any activity. | 90 days |
data_export_done |
Strictly necessary | Set for 60 seconds when you download a copy of your data, so the page can tell the download finished and say so. Downloading a file fires nothing the page can listen for, which is the only reason this exists. Holds a random one-use string, no data about you, and the page deletes it as soon as it has read it. | 60 seconds |
vokio_cookie_consent |
Essential | Records that you have seen the cookie notice, so it is not shown again. | 1 year |
We also store your theme choice in your browser's local storage (vokio-theme) so
the correct theme is applied instantly on your next visit without a flash of the wrong colours.
This stays on your device until you clear your browser storage.
All code libraries and fonts used by Vokio are served from our own servers. We do not load scripts, fonts, or other content from third-party content delivery networks, so no third party receives your IP address through the pages you visit.
You can delete or block cookies through your browser settings. Note that blocking the essential cookies above will prevent parts of Vokio (such as signing in) from working.
